EAS 270: Answers to questions that had been left unanswered on the final lecture PDF (and had not been provided in a subsequent class)
- Wednesday 19 Oct., p7/11:
- 0.95=e/e*(-2oC) = e/(0.517 kPa), so, e=0.49 kPa. Then ρv = e/(RvT) = 490 / (462 x 271.15) = 3.9 x 10-3 kg m-3. The dewpoint Td lies somewhere between -2oC and -3oC
- e=0.49 x e*(27oC)=0.49 x 3.57 kPa = 1.75 kPa. Then ρv = e/(RvT) = 1750 / (462 x (273.15+27)) = 1.3 x 10-2 kg m-3.
- Wedenesday 5 Oct., p11/12: (i) Edmonton 2 June, θnoon=90-|53.5-22|=58.5o, (ii) Auckland 10 May, θnoon=90-|-36.8-17|=36.2o.
- Friday 30 Sept., p6/10: E2=1398 W m-2 (i.e. roughly the same as earth's solar constant)
- Monday 26 Sept., p3/13: at P=900 hPa, T=298.12 K
- Friday 23 Sept., p9/9: (i) T=10oC at z=1000 m, (ii) T=11oC at z=900 m, (iii) best guess is T=-15oC (cloud and wind will minimize the effect on local temperature of sunlight absorbed on the mountainside).
- Wednesday 21 Sept., p3/11: western Europe has a milder climate than the Cdn prairies because the generally westerly flow ensures it tends to experience masses of air that had been over the ocean (and are therefore mild). The Gulfstream accentuates this trend.
- Monday 19 Sept., p6/9: (ii) Δz=1580 m (158 dam)
- Friday 16 Sept., p5/8: (i) ρ=1.12 kg m-3, (ii) p=363 hPa, (iii) ρ=1.13 kg m-3
- Monday 12 Sept., p6/10: mass of CO2 gained per square metre M=10-6 × 3 × 30 × 10 × 3600 ≈ 3 kg. Since only (12/32)ths of this mass is carbon, the implied carbon uptake is roughly 1 kg.
- Monday 12 Sept., p9/10: the mass lifted is M ≈ 2.5×103 kg.
